What is a good depth to engrave wood?

I want to use my CNC machine that is mounted with a router to engrave a design into wood. What is a good depth to set?

2. it depends da wood, but its a good 3 1/2 mm or 4mm

3. depends on what kind of cutter your useing
if its a flat mill bit start at 1/8 inch go to 1/4 inch
if its a bull nose go to 1/4 inch
all at 1/4 inch
