Wireless Router Question?
ok, so i have a scientific atlanta cable modem. i was thinking about getting a wireless router. i mainly want to use a wireless router for my psp, but it would be nice if i could use it for my computer to without any problems. so heres the qusetions: first, does the wireless router i get have to come from the same company as my cable modem (scientific atlanta)? second qusetion: how do i install a wireless router to my computer ( do i need to plug it in or does my computer just pick up the signal wirelessly)? third: will my internet speed change if i change from a modem to a router? (fast or slow)
finally: i was just wondering psp's can only use routers designed for the psp. thank u and sry it is so long.
one last question... if i get a wireless router do i still have to keep my cable modem? or does the router replace it?

1. No, the wireless router that you purchase doesn't have to be the same brand as your modem is.
The router may come with an installation CD, but you may be able to set it up without using one by typing 192.168.0.1 into your browser and logging in using your username and password.
If you don't know what they are, I would suggest that you try one of the ones below.

Good luck and I hope I helped you!
2. 1. No it doesn't have to be the same brand as your cable modem. I suggest Linksys routers for home use.
2. There's generally a CD that comes with new routers. Plug the CD in and follow the instructions. Should be easy.
3. You won't feel the change in speed if there are any. Just keep the wireless router a good distance away and you'll be fine.
3. 1) No - my current modem is a Scientific Atlanta, and it's connected to a Linksys router. There are standards - almost any modem can work with almost any router.
2) You can plug the computer's ethernet cable into the router, or you can get a wireless adapter. Most desktop computers do not have built in wireless, however.
3) If you connect the computer with a wire, no. Wireless does run slower, but it is highly unlikely that will affect you at all. There is generally no noticible difference.
4. No, your router can be made by another company. I would go with a Linksys router like this one:

The router hooks upto the cable modem the same way a computer would with an ethernet cable. You can connect your computer to the router as you would your modem with an ethernet cable or use a wireless adapter for your computer to pickup its wireless connection. It is good to stick with same brands here if you can.
You shouldn't see any difference in Internet speed for the exception of the wireless network.
The PSPs are on 802.11 b, so therefore the router you get should accomidate this. A newer 802.11 g router will also work for you.
5. OK, no the router doesn't have to be from the cable company. I suggest a Linksys (Link at bottom) a wireless router does slow your internet speed but only if a lot of people are on it or something, other than that it's the same. As for the wireless connection, it's a max of 54mb/s compared to 100mb/s plugged into the router. To set it up, google Linksys easy connect and download the program and run it BEFORE unplugging the computer, then (it will explain this in the program) unplug the ethernet cord going from the modem to the computer and plug it into the internet port on the back of the router, then take the included ethernet cable and plug one end into port 1 on the router and the other into your computer, then continue the setup MAKING SURE to create a WEP or WPA key for security. Finish the setup and get on your PSP and search for your network, enter the key and you're in =) if you want to have a wireless connection from your computer then you need a wireless card (only for desktops, laptops have them already installed) But this will be a slower connection and not be as good for games and such.
