How many laptops can connect to a Netgear Wireless router typicaly?

How many wireless Laptops can connect to a Netgear WIRELESS-G router, wirelessly and simultaneously?

I had my aunt go out and buy a Netgear WGR614 so she could connect each of her son's (5 ) laptops, my cousins' PSP and my uncle's laptop to it. She had alot of trouble getting things running and sat through a troubleshooter Tech Supoort (you know how helpful the tech support in INDIA is) - and she only got one of them online.

Is this router designed to allow for multiple connections even for low-speed internet browsing?

Public Comments

1. It should support 7 to 10 computer connections.

2. Way more than five can use one wireless router, but speaking from my own experience a lot of configuration gotchas can happen with individual devices for those uninitiated to using wireless. Turn off WEP/WPA and take note of the proper network name SSID is most important step.

3. Typically a router can handle over 20-50 computer simultaneously connected via WiFi. We actually have a Netgear at my job and usually 20-30 devices are connected at once and even downloading lots of content without a major slowdown.

4. Usually about 2-3 lap tops. Four Makes it unreliable. But it all depends were the lap tops are placed. If they are near the router you have a better chance. If they are farther away the less chance u have.

5. For a soho device, specs would say at most 64. Optimally, shouldnt be more than 20.

6. You have to go into the router settings and see how many ip addresses it is set up for. Typically they are set for 254 addresses though on DHCP, so that shouldn't be a problem. Here I have a different router, but I have 3 computers, a PSP, the Wii and the Nintendo DS with NO problems at all. If all she has is under 10 devices there should not be any problems. I'd look for another problem.
