How to differentiate between two computers using the same router (IP address)?

Me and my brother want to host and play on a Minecraft server, but for some reason, when the other types the IP in their computer, it says that the server cannot be reached. I think this may be because we are using the same router and therefore have the same IP.

First, do you think I am right? Is the IP address really the problem?
And second, is there a way to get by this, if this is the problem?

1. The server computer has manually configured the network adapter? Set a static ip address for the server, like 192.168.1.15, ect. And which ip are you entering in? The actual computer IP (192.168...) or your WAN ip? If you can't connect using the WAN IP then it's probably a port forwarding or firewall issue.

2. Your computers have different local network IP addresses. The router performs a network address translation to allow the computers on your private network to communicate with the public network., so IP address issues should not be a problem.

You can open a command window and try a tracert to the Minecraft server. This might let you know where the communications stop. It is possible that some firewall is stopping communication on the ports used for Minecraft. There is a description of enabling the ports at the reference website.

3. No , you are not right. If your router is also your DHCP (It is a protocol that gives out IP ), then you get different IP Address. But the problem is , most likely one of you either you or your brother can not get IP address from the DHCP . For this , you could have different problems such as Ethernet card, Cable etc. In order you to test the ethernet card problem , go to the command prompt (start +run+type cmd +hit enter ) and type ping 127.0.0.1 if you get reply there is no problem . check to see the light behind the problematic computer , if you see green light the cable is ok. Try to reset your router (if you have verizon as ISP , Do not do it without calling them ), by pressing and holding the reset botton (30 seconds ) right behind the router. While doing the reset , unplug the modem and wait as well. Unplug the router , plug the modem back in , and plug the router back in , The network cable (rj45 ) from the modem (Your ISP gives you ) goes to your routers WAN or INTERNET port, and other cables go from your router to the computers . Normally this way should work , If it does not work ,In VERIZON there is a setting for PPOE and Bridge for router Call verizon they will help you .
