How do you hook up a router to the computer?
What comes with a router? What is the difference between a wireless router and regular router?

1. A router provides a central interface for multiple computers to connect. A wireless router is just a wireless version of the same thing--it has an antenna and transmits the signal to wireless LAN cards.
To set up a network, you simply need a LAN card for each computer you want on the network (wireless card if using wireless router). The router will have to be connected to an internet source--either a DSL modem or cable modem--whichever you use to connect. Then, either connect your computer to the router via cat 5 cable (usually comes with card or router), or if using wireless, just search for available networks with the software that comes with your wireless card.
Most new laptops come with built in wireless cards... so if using a laptop, you may not need to buy one.
If you do need to buy a wireless lan card and don't want to have to open up your case and install it, you can find little USB wireless lan cards that are about the size of a flash drive and you just plug them in like a flash drive as well.
2. Ok the difference between a wireless router and a a normal router is that the wireless router allows you to connect wirelessly... if you are not going to use any wireless devices it is better to get a normal one... but yet again it is always good to have a wireless one, just in case. If you are planning on purchasing one, I recommend you the 2Wire gateway router, it is a router and a modem at the same time, thus making the connection very easy and simple.
If you are going to get a router by itself, then it is going to be somewhat difficult to connect it. First you need to find out the type of modem that you have, in order to know if we are going to have to put it on bridge mode or not. Bridge modem is basically a process that lets the modem know that it is not going to be sending the internet signal to your computer anymore, that a router is going to do that job, we need to do this in order for you to get connected, sometimes we don't need to do that and only configure the router.
To configure the router we have to access the router and enter your user id and password associated to your internet account. That user id and password was provided by your internet provider, it is most of the time like an e-mail address.... if you don't have these information then you are going to have to contact your internet provider.... sometimes your internet provider can help you set up your router, but sometimes they charge... if you want to I can help you further with the installation, it is not complicated at all.... e-mail me @ ckravell@gmail.com, if you need more assistance, I am glad to help... God bless you and take care...
