Can you use a wireless router without hooking it up to a modem?

Ok I have an old G router that is not being used because we upgraded to N. My room is on the opposite side of the house from the modem and the N router. Is there anyway I can take the G router and hook it up in my room if there is no modem in the room. My bars are low in my room and I need to boost my connection for Xbox LIVE and video streaming and stuff. Any Ideas?

1. You can use to make a new wireless network, but they generally don't connect to an already existing wireless network.

I would suggest you get a wireless repeaters or bridge.

2. no you can not use the G router unless you are a genus and take it apart and completely reprogram it. you can buy a network booster that you can place half way in between your xbox and the N router. Also i Have an xbox and i dont know if you are using Microsoft's xbox receiver or another kind of receiver, but it you are using the Xbox receiver i know that it is not N-compatible. but anyways just buy a network booster.
