What is the best router to use for LAN at home?

I want to network two computers together. (See my other question "Sharing DSL service?")

I want a good quality router that will perform well and give good security without paying an arm and leg.

I found a Refurbished CISCO1604-R for $35.00. Is this a good price?
Anybody have an opinion on this particular router or on D-Link, Linksys or Cisco routers?
Thanks.

1. Linksys is a good brand for networking and they're fairly reasonable. I have a router that works great and it was only $34.99 after rebate.

2. I can't help you with the Cisco.

I prefer Linksys but mainly because I am familiar with them. Setup is a no brainer & security is good. They are not very expensive.

3. Linksys is a very reliable router for $35 after rebate. I use it w/ my wireless DSL and it works beautifully

4. I often find myself recommending Netgear routers. It's all I personally use for my networking needs. They are easy to set up and maintain. And best of all They generally have 3 year warranty's.

On the contrary, I recommend Linksys routers if you want extreem flexability with your router, namily the ability to load linux on it and do other advanced things.

For most people the added "features" of the Linksys router is not worth it. The netgear routers are by far easier to setup than the linksys routers.

As far as security is concerned, they both work well. Provided you understand the pro's and con's of the encryption and other security methods offered by the product.

Hopefully that helps.
