How do I access my netgear router's default gateway?

I have a netgear wgr614v5 router and a vista 32 bit operating system.I have tried everything to access my router and nothing works.It says the default is 192.168.1.1 but when I type in those numbers I get nothing.Help.

1. at the command prompt type "ipconfig /all" without the quotation marks. Among other things it will give you an entry referring to the default gateway ipaddress this will the the address of your router. Open your browser and in the address bar type "http://insert gateway ipaddress here" The router should prompt you for a username and password at this point

2. can you ping it?

Start>Run> type CMD and hit return
In the command window type: ping 192.168.1.1

If you get a reply, maybe your browser is set to use a proxy, if no reply, then the router is broke or has a different IP assigned. good luck!
