Is it possible to gain access to a router by simply knowing the IP address?

I know that most routers keep a log of all your online activities. Is it possible that someone who knows my IP can remotely access my router and use it to track my online activity? I'm quite certain that there's no software installed on my pc, since I re-format it often. You can rule out use of any keyloggers or such.

1. Uhm haha no your fine. Your router is on a local host. For example my routers IP is 192.168.2.1. Your routers IP may be exactly the same but it will take you to yours, not mine. Its like two people having the same cars, but the keys are different.

2. The remote access to routers is usually turned off but it is a good idea to change the login password from the default. It is either "admin" or "password".

If you know how to access your router, check that "Remote Access" is turned off and change the login (Admin) password.

3. I assuming this your home router. If it's wireless and you haven't changed the admin logon password and the settings are such that a wireless connection can connect to the router's internal web maintenance page, yes someone could potentially see where you've been.

Not all home broadband routers have a logging capability. And if it exists, it's usually by default turned off.

Make sure to change the router's login password to a strong password (mixed case, combo numbers and letters, at least 6-8 characters long) and use the strongest wireless encryption possible and you should be fine.

4. The only way someone could access your router from the Internet is if they knew the IP address that your ISP has assigned you and if you setup the Remote Access feature to your router from the outside and they knew your username and password that you setup for this access. Without these two conditions being met then really isn't any way someone can access your router.
